Objective The aim of this study was to explore the effects of four sealing materials on the marginal permeability of composite resin fillings via an in vitro experiment. Methods Class V cavities were prepared on the buccal and lingual sides of third molars with intact crowns and no caries. 150 specimens were obtained after being restored with composite (3M Z350) and randomly divided into 5 groups (n=30). No marginal sealing was done on the restorations in the negative control group (CT group); and the margins of fillings in other four groups were sealed with Single Bond Universal (SU group), G-Coat Plus (GC group), PermaSeal (PS group) and Icon penetration resin (IC group) respectively. Ten specimens in each group were subjected to thermocycling procedures (1000 cycles from 5℃ to 55℃ with a dwell time of 30s at each temperature), another 10 specimens in each group were subjected to water aging (in saline under 37℃ for 3 months), and the remaining 10 specimens were directly subjected to microleakage evaluation. The dye penetration method was used to evaluate the degree of microleakage. SPSS 23.0 was used for data analysis, and the significance level was at 0.05. Results Under any conditions, the microleakage level of the specimens in the GC group was the lowest, and significantly lower than that in the CT group (P<0.05). Only under a few circumstances, the microleakage level of specimens in the SU and PS group was significantly lower than that in the CT group (P<0.05). After aging procedures, the microleakage level at the coronal margin of specimens in the IC group significantly increased (P<0.05); on the contrary, the microleakage level of specimens in the SU group did not change significantly (P>0.05). Conclusion In this experiment, the application of various sealing materials can reduce microleakage of composite restorations to varying degrees, and G-Coat Plus showed the best performance. |
